CDFI Outcomes in KS & MO from 2005-2023: What Can We Learn?

Our New Maps
As part of a new development for the KC CDFI Coalition, we have created four maps illustrating CDFI investments in Kansas and Missouri from 2005-2023, broken up into State Senate and House of Representatives Districts. This information comes straight from the CDFI Fund’s Transaction Level Reports. These interactive maps allow us to see where funds are being utilized most, showing information about how much money was loaned, how many loans were given, and the average loan amount. Additionally, these maps are tools to visualize which communities we can look into helping further.
What This Data Shows Us
The data found in these maps provides key insight into where CDFIs are making financial impacts and what gaps exist. One common myth is that CDFIs only benefit the bigger, more urban areas. As we can see from the State House maps specifically, this is simply not true. Take southern Missouri, for example. The districts near Springfield, Missouri, such as District 155 and 156, had around $250 million dollars loaned to them within these years from over 3,300 loans overall. On the Kansas side, District 116 received over $23 million in loans, with the average loan ranging over $1.5 million. These three districts are all considered predominantly rural.
That’s not to say CDFIs avoid urban areas either. The Kansas City metropolitan area in particular has experienced significant CDFI investment. In total, the KC Metro garnered over $1 billion from over 6,500 loans. Other big cities in the bi-state area include:
Over 30 million dollars in the Wichita, KS area.
Over 300 million dollars in the St. Louis, MO area.
Over 500 million dollars in the Springfield, MO area.
Additional Relevant Information
There is still additional impact data not shown in these maps that further displays the amount of growth produced within these two states as well. One particularly impressive statistic lies in Missouri’s State Senate District 25, home to Poplar Bluff. CDFIs created or retained over 7,600 total jobs, financed more than 475 consumers, and developed over 36 million square feet of land. Similarly, in State Senate District 6 in Kansas, which includes Merriam and Mission, CDFIs have helped develop over 700 affordable housing units.
Ultimately, the amount of progress and development produced by Missouri and Kansas over the years provides a glimpse into the significance of CDFIs in our local communities. The Kansas City CDFI Coalition is proud of the growth accomplished thus far and can’t wait to see the long-lasting effect our network continues to have.
